Avici's Reliable Alternate Paths for Internet Destinations (RAPID™)

Solving the Convergence Problem

Traditionally, link and node failures in IP or MPLS LDP networks have been handled by recomputing routes after the failure occurence. However, such rerouting is slow and unsuitable for real-time applications like voice and video. As a result, high-margin, stringent SLAs simply cannot be offered by service providers for such applications without using costly and complex protection mechanisms.

Avici's patented Reliable Alternate Paths for Internet Destinations RAPID™ uses advanced algorithms to dramatically speed up recovery from link and node failures by installing alternate paths in the network. Using RAPID, carriers can now offer high margin SLAs for real-time sercvices over an IP or LDP core network.

Key Benefits of RAPID:

  • Self-healing capability with transparent sub-50 ms failure recovery.
  • Link and Node protection coverage.
  • Protection coverage up to 100% for most topologies.
  • Low dependence on protocol extensions for high interoperability.
  • Low operational complexity for OPEX reduction.
  • Interoperable with other protection mechanisms.
  • Minimal inter-nodal dependencies for high scalability.
  • Presents effective migration path to MPLS network cores.

Avici's RAPID protection solution is broadly supported by both the service provider and vendor community and the solution has received draft acceptance at the IETF.

RAPID(TM) Benefits vs. Alternatives

All Avici routers provide support for other protection mechanims such as MPLS Fast Reroute (local protection), APS, and 802.3ad link aggregation. All protection mechanisms have achieved better than 45 millisecond recovery times.
